I'll have fries and a side of food addiction.

There's really no eloquent or catchy way to start this post, so let's just dive right in, mm-k?

I believe 100% I'm a food addict. I don't care if that sounds dramatic. I don't care if people question the validity of it. It's true and I'm just really tired of pretending around everyone that food is a safe thing for me. Cause it ain't.

I once went to OA-Overearers Anonymous. It was held in a total "blood of Christ" church, complete with a scary Jesus hanging from crosses. The church was probably 150 years old and to top it off the OA meeting was held...wait for it...in the freekin' basement. Um, yeah are you feeling the anxiety? Ultimately, my first meeting was my last meeting. A little too much Christ talk for my taste. This is not to offend anyone, seriously. To sum it up, Jim Gaffigan says it best

Anyways...back to the topic Katy

Food Addiction. Some experts think it's not a general food addiction, but more of a sugar addiction. I sort of agree. Here's why.

I've never obsessed about carrots and hummus. I've never driven to store to get carrots, eaten the carrots in the car and discarded the plastic carrot bag so I could try and pretend it never happened and to hide the evidence. I've also never done that with Apples, grapes, oranges, zucchini, chicken breasts or lima beans. Aren't lima beans like the WORST of the WORST?

I have however done this with junk foods. Cookies, cakes, candy, fast food, chips.... EVERYTHING has sugar in it. If it's not a vegetable, a fruit, or a protein, it likely has sugar in it.

How do I know?

Because this last week I totally gave it up. We cleared our pantry and fridge last Monday and the only things that made the cut were fruits, greens, veggies, and things like chicken, fish and pork. Even MAYO has sugar in it!! The only condiment that was allowed was mustard. If you look in our fridge on the side doors where everyone keeps things like salad dressing, ketchup etc...ours is now bare, save it for a lonely jar of mus-tardo. If you're anything like me, your first thought was, sweet, so we're going to be eating mustard chicken? YUCK.

Truth is, it's been pretty good. I've had two detox moments that weren't pretty, but other than those short lived events a few tears I've been fairly normal.

I even lost 5 lbs this week. It's good to feel in control of myself. Here's to another week sans sugar.

  1. I hope you keep going; it'll be really interesting to hear (*read) your results as it 's for the most part how people have survived for like...ever! That's not to sound sarcastic BTW; I'm really looking forward to hearing your experience & wish you great success! I'm may or may not being eating something with mayo right now;-) Any more yoga instructor news?

  2. I am a firm believer in minimizing sugar intake (I aim for 0, but that is an impossible task) My weight loss (and health) journey was greatly enhanced when I went the no sugar/starch/grains route this January. No more plateaus, cravings or even second thoughts about sweets, except the 2-3 servings of fruit - usually berries - that are part of my plan. (OK, OK the rare Starbucks Mocha light Frappucino enters my gut - but hey, no one is perfect)

  3. This is a great step! And you'll lose tons of weight, and probably all fat-weight too, and not just the water. Just be careful of the disastrous after-effect.....what will happen once you reintroduce these foods back into your diet. Are you planning to? Ever?

  4. I can so relate to the 'drive to the store to get carrots'....I too am kind of a sugar addict...and it makes my weight loss journey that much harder. Good luck! I love reading your blog! :)

  5. I totally understand your sugar addiction, I seem to have the same problem! I don't think I'm going to get rid of it totally, but getting rid of foods with added sugars is definitely going to be a goal of mine soon. Good luck! :)
