Yoga for the big gals

It's funny how things work sometimes.

Just a couple weeks ago I found myself surrounded by the fit and the beautiful in Scottsdale Arizona sweating my ass off in a yoga class that was super challenging. Something must of cracked in me during that class because since then I just can't get enough yoga. It's always happened this way though. I'll practice and teach for years and then I'll be like, meh, I wanna do something else. Then I'll get really into it again for years, then I'll cool off. I used to beat myself up for this, but it's just me. I'm sort of an all or nothing kinda gal. Sometimes it bites me in the butt, like when I let the laundry pile up the wall for a good 3 weeks and suddenly I'm at Target buying underwear and my husband is on the verge of a nervous breakdown because HE HAS NOTHING TO WEAR except this hideous martial arts jacket/shirt type thing I bought him years ago. I have no idea what I was thinking buying something with dragons embroidered on the back. Crazy town!

ANYWAYS....

So I've been going to these really kick your ass classes where everyone looks like they're under 22 and attend ASU which is like the school for hot young tan fit sexy ladies. I'm not joking when I say that literally everyone was hot and young. I was like the big pale 30 year old WOMAN. But whatever, I own it. I need to push myself out of my comfort zone in a serious way.

My last blog post Jill said that she wishes there was some sort of fat yoga. DING DING DING. I've been feeling this way too!
This has spurred me on to go out and create it! Truth is, I'm not 100% comfortable teaching at a studio that's run by skinny girls who just can't imagine that I could ever teach. I SHOULD be able to be ok with this, but I'm just not that evolved yet.

So over the past few days I've put the word out to a few spaces that could host yoga, and I've gotten nothing but a 100% positive response. I will most likely start out by teaching a series of 6 classes. Once a week for 6 weeks where we not only explore what yoga looks like for a larger body, but also how it feels, what comes up emotionally, what expectations we place on ourselves in terms of body image etc...

To say I'm excited is an understatement. Be the change you want to see in the world, right? I want a yoga community that really REALLY embraces women and men of all sizes and meets people where they are. I want to create a new consciousness around what yoga really is. It is not about touching your toes and contorting into postures. Yes, that can be fun and a good party trick, but it's not the meat and potatoes. The meat of yoga is acceptance...that and a WHOLE LOTTA OTHER STUFF. Stuff I can't wait to share.

So if you're in Denver, know of anyone who is who may be interested, pass along my info and spread the word.

More info soon :)

  1. This is a great idea! Wish we had this here. I love yoga, I do the biggest loser weight loss yoga, cuz it's the only one I've found that doesn't involve a 7 foot tall 98 lb woman in a unitard talking about the universe.

    ;)

Sounds great! Have at it! I'm sure it'll be a success! I'd go if I were there. :D

  2. I think this is a great idea! Yoga should be for everyone, and even though it's not expressly an exclusive activity, it sometimes feels that way.

I can't wait to hear how this goes!

  4. Okay you know that scene in Bridesmaids where they are exercising behind the tree? I have thought about doing that with a yoga class. A kids' yoga class. You have great ideas, and I love that you run with them.

  5. This is fantastic. I wish I was closer and would so go. I love yoga but have stopped going because I feel I just don't fit in. Maybe I should be more like you and own it. :)
